The UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC) presents the official launch event of the 'Adopt an MP' campaign – Parliament in the Park.
Taking place on
Monday 13 September, 1-4pm, Parliament in the Park will bring together over 200 young people with politicians and other guests for a picnic in
Old Palace Yard, Westminster.
By allowing young people and MPs to meet over a slice of cake, rather than in the dark corridors of the House of Commons, Parliament in the Park will bring politicians closer to young people in a casual, fun and engaging way.
Over the picnic you will be able to begin the
personal relationship that 'Adopt an MP' hopes to foster, and start to find out
what local environmental issues your MP is interested in.
Adding substance to the afternoon’s sustenance will be a series of speeches and workshops providing you with the information and training you'll need to make your adoption effective.
Speakers at the event include Caroline Lucas, leader of the Green Party, and Simon Hughes, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, and there'll be some inspiring stories from UKYCC members - amongst others!
In addition to speakers, there will also be a UKYCC workshop, ‘Framing the Debate’, based on the ideas and theories of cognitive scientist George Lakoff. The workshop has been made specifically for young people and will give you the tools required to reshape the climate change debate into a positive and exciting idea.
The Adopt an MP campaign is not about criticism or praise, but remembering that MPs are humans and supporting them to make a stand and fight for a difference when it comes to local issues and national policy to create the
clean, fair, future that we need.
By building a personal relationship with your MP and by looking around your local area and to decide what you want to change, the campaign will bring young people and MPs together to make sure that building a clean energy future is an important issue for every MP, and that young people all over the UK get their voice heard.
