Over 1,500 Girl Guides around the UK have taken part in UNICEF’s Just Say Yes project to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and its effect on children around the world.

The Tagd team paid a visit to one of the Girlguiding groups who took part, the 1st Taunton Wellsprings Brownies, and were exceedingly impressed by their efforts.

The Brownies made colourful and eye-catching posters, discussed discrimination and even wrote to their local MP Jeremy Browne about HIV and AIDS prevention, later receiving a response from the Department of Health.

They also raised an impressive £227 - enough to provide HIV medicine for five children for a month! The Taunton Brownies’ guiding Leaders used one of the two fun-filled activity packs UNICEF has produced to promote talking about and taking action on HIV and AIDS.

The packs – one is aimed at Brownies and younger Guides, while the other is for Guides and Senior Section members feature games on understanding HIV, case studies from young people affected by the disease and loads of tips on how to raise awareness of the issue, from a Red Ribbon ‘Shout Out’ to getting in touch with your MP.

The Taunton Brownies were inspired to make their posters for World AIDS Day, which takes place this year on 1 December. If you would like to make an AIDS awareness of fundraising event more colourful, follow these links and download some examples our GirlGuides made earlier.
