UNICEF delivers aid to children in DR Congo.
Heavy fighting in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has caused up to 1 million people to flee their homes, 60% of whom are children.
Those displaced have very limited access to clean water and health care. Hundreds of children have been separated from their families, while up to 300 young people have been recruited by armed groups.
Malnutrition is widespread, with 13% of children believed to be affected, and there is a real danger that young people will contract diseases such as measles, cholera and typhoid.
UNICEF's response
We are vaccinating over 1 million children in the eastern DRC and have built over 1,000 emergency toilets. Plastic sheets for shelter, blankets, buckets to carry clean water and water purification tablets are also being provided.
Efforts are also being made to help young people who have been separated from their families. Since the start of 2009, 1,075 separated children have been reunited with their parents, while others have been placed with temporary foster families.
UNICEF are addressing a young person's right to an education by working with partner organisations to build schools. 67 emergency classrooms have been constructed and 3,449 education kits have been supplied.
