Taking photos is a great way to illustrate a cause, inspire and inform people and spread your message. It can also be a lot of fun. Here's our tips on how to take a good photo.

Remember a photo needs to catch the viewer’s eye and possibly tell a story. When you take a photo think about the story you want to tell. To get some inspiration and understand what makes a good image, look at images you like and see what catches your eye. Why did you like that particular photo? Is it the colours? The composition? The subject?

You can find a lot of images online. For example, the previous winners of the Sony World Photography Award. Or even better, you can organise a day out with your friends or family and go to a photo exhibition in your local area. To find out what’s on have a look at the art listing section of a local or national newspaper.

And once you're feeling confident enough, you could think about entering photography competitions like the Sony World Photography Award.
