In 2005, UNICEF launched an international campaign, 'Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS', to bring the urgent needs of children affected by HIV to the world’s attention.
Specifically, the campaign aims to:
-
Reduce the spread of the HIV virus to children and young people
- Keep children and their parents alive longer and alive together
-
Protect and care for children made vulnerable by AIDS
-
Increase the availability of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) for children and importantly pregnant women to ensure their children are born free of the virus.
UNICEF UK's 'Live Free from HIV' campaign is the latest phase of the campaign, launched in May 2009, and focuses on prevention of infection in young people.

In 2008, young people aged 15 to 24 accounted for around 40 per cent of new HIV infections worldwide. Almost two young people are estimated to be infected with HIV every minute. On average, only 30 per cent of young men and 19 per cent of young women in developing countries have full and correct knowledge about HIV and how to prevent themselves from being infected. Not enough attention is being given to preventing HIV from spreading further among young people around the world.

'Live free from HIV' aims to raise over £2 million for HIV and AIDS and to remind governments of the importance of effective HIV prevention amongst young people.
