More about HIV and AIDS

Campaign success!

After years of campaigning, the HIV and AIDS patent pool is a reality. Well done! Find out more about the patent pool campaign success.

Case study: HIV in Barbados

The 2009 Junior 8 team interview Fabian about his experience of being affected by HIV as a child.

Clue up on HIV and AIDS

Want to separate the facts from the fiction? Watch this video to get clued up on HIV and AIDS.

In 2005, UNICEF launched an international campaign, 'Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS', to bring the urgent needs of children affected by HIV to the world’s attention.

Specifically, the campaign aims to:

  • Reduce the spread of the HIV virus to children and young people
  • Keep children and their parents alive longer and alive together
  • Protect and care for children made vulnerable by AIDS
  • Increase the availability of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) for children and importantly pregnant women to ensure their children are born free of the virus.
Live Free from HIV

UNICEF UK's 'Live Free from HIV' campaign is the latest phase of the campaign, launched in May 2009, and focuses on prevention of infection in young people.

In 2008, young people aged 15 to 24 accounted for around 40 per cent of new HIV infections worldwide. Almost two young people are estimated to be infected with HIV every minute. On average, only 30 per cent of young men and 19 per cent of young women in developing countries have full and correct knowledge about HIV and how to prevent themselves from being infected. Not enough attention is being given to preventing HIV from spreading further among young people around the world.

Check out these animations by The Three Amigos and share them with your friends to raise awareness of HIV prevention.

'Live free from HIV' aims to raise over £2 million for HIV and AIDS and to remind governments of the importance of effective HIV prevention amongst young people.

What you can do

Concerned about the issue of HIV and AIDS but not sure what to do about it? Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Organise a Red Ribbon Party for your friends.
  2. Bake cupcakes with a difference to raise awareness of HIV and sexual health.
  3. Download the HIV and sexual health peer education pack.
  4. Raise money for the Live Free campaign.
  • Many of us have ways to campaign against HIV/AIDS but like myself am at Los Angeles and would like to have my campaign at Africa since am used to the enviroment, but it not easy to get support, but hope to get some soon. We have tried to reduce the spread at the developed countries but have to go to the developing countries where it still remains as a full treat to the world youth.

  • Thanks for your comment rodedele. Follow the 'Take Action' link at the top of the page and email your MP on the 'early day motion' which calls on pharmaceutical companies to join the UNITAID patent pool. This will allow companies to adapt existing HIV medicines to make them suitable for children. Hugh (Tagd web team)
