Climate change isn't children's fault - but they're the ones who feel its effects the most through things like diseases and lack of food. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Samuel, 14, from Kenya explains:
"Climate change is affecting us and, in the future if we are not involved, we will live in a desert."
Children in poor countries need help to protect themselves against the harmful effects of climate change. That's why we, with your help, have asked the Government to do something about it.
Thank you to all of you who signed our
Get Children Climate Ready petition. This petition asked the UK Government to raise the billions of pounds needed to help children in poorer countries adapt to climate change. This money could be raised from a
Robin Hood Tax on banks, and by taxes on dirty fuels from ships and aeroplanes, which are called bunker taxes.
Good news on bunker taxes but more to do on the Robin Hood Tax
Thanks to campaigners like you, governments around the world are now talking about the Robin Hood Tax - which would raise billions to fight poverty and climate change. Unfortunately, the UK Government is behind other countries in supporting the Robin Hood Tax - so we'll need your help to make sure they do their bit.
Your campaigning in 2011 has also helped persuade the UK Government to support bunker taxes on dirty fuels. The Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said in Parliament that he believed bunker taxes were one way of raising the money needed. This is good news.
Although the Government likes the idea of a bunker tax on shipping fuels, there is less support for a tax on aeroplane fuels. World leaders, including our Prime Minister David Cameron, will be talking about these new ways to raise money at the next G20 in June 2012, the next big meeting of world governments. Check back here soon to find out what you can do to help!
