Child poverty in the UK

One in three children lives in poverty in the UK - that’s 3.5 million children. This is one of the worst rates in the western world.

Most children living in poverty in the UK have at least one parent in work. If that work is low-paid, then it may not help the family get out of poverty.

Poverty has a big impact on the health and well-being of children. It denies them their right to education and to be healthy.

Mind the Gap

Do you mind the Gap? One in three children in the UK lives in poverty - this is one of the highest rates in the western world.

With research showing that more children risk being forced into poverty over the next few years now is the time to act. UNICEF UK wants the Government to meet their promise to end child poverty by 2020.

UNICEF UK is also calling on the Government to promote the Living Wage - a wage that allows working families to earn enough to escape poverty. The Government should also introduce a Robin Hood Tax on the UK financial sector to raise £10 billion to combat UK child poverty.

Thanks to all the campaigners who took part in the action. On the eve of the Budget, we took your message direct to the Prime Minister David Cameron at No 10 and Dr Vince Cable at the Department for Business and Innovation & Skills and we will let you know their response.

  • Itscrazy i had no idea that people were actually living like that until i watched the bbc1 documentary. Robin Hood was dead good when he was alive so i think its a great idea =] I would support this definately

  • This is an issue which I think so clearly needs to be addressed. I just this evening watched a documentary on the BBC called 'Poor Children' and it was so strong and hard hitting it really made me think. I don't think there is any excuse for people to be living in poverty when so many of us are living in luxury just a few miles down the road. A lot needs to be done on this issue! I think the Robin Hood Tax is an excellent idea!
